Jazz Band creating culture of 'self-discipline'

Several members from the Cy Springs Jazz Band auditioned, and qualified for Region Jazz 2019 on Sept. 25th at Cy Springs High School.

Kaylee Christensen is one of the band directors, but she is also the main director for Jazz Band. In the past the Jazz Band 1 ( the one Christensen directs) has earned awards at festivals and competitions because of their members.

“I think the students in the jazz program have created a culture of self-discipline and desire for musical excellence,” said Christensen. “The students are driving their own learning by working together to practice, and challenging each other to continue to grow. They give each other feedback constantly. This is the most students we have had place into the Region Jazz Band!”

The majority of the members that have placed in Region Jazz placed first in their audition room. They are able to qualify for Area Jazz, even if they are second in their room.

“I was able to be successful for my audition because of the incredible support from my peers and teachers, along with patience and good practice, I was able to achieve my goals I wanted to complete for myself,” said junior Christian Medina.
